Grafitti Art in Glasgow School of Art.
Hello, I'm looking for help/advice. I am the President of the Glasgow School of art which is very well known not only as a School of Art but also as an underground club in Glasgow. We are currently experiencing a HUGE problem with tagging. It's costing us so much time and money to remove that I feel we have to address the problem in a new way. The only things I can think of are having a dedicated space within the Students' Union/Club in which Grafitti Artists are invited to come and make work on a regular basis, perhaps monthly. We could hold opening nights for each new Artist and would welcome press coverage etc. The other thing I am very keen to do is hold a debate in the Students Union/Club about Grafitti as Art or Vandalism. There is so much interest in the subject at the moment in Glasgow that I think something needs to be done with it. Grafiiti Art has suffered a great deal from bad press due to increasing problems with tagging. Last year The Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow held a talk from Grafitti Artists and was a sell out event. However, it seemed to encourage more people to experiment with with tagging in the area and so created bad feelings towards true Grafitti Art. I am very keen to make these high profile events which really adrress the current themes/ issues around Grafitti Art. If anyone can help or would be willng to participate please do not hesitate to contact me at e.dearie@gsa.ac.uk or phone me on 0141 353 4529. Many Thanks for your help and support,
Elaine Dearie President GSASA 167 Renfrew Street Glasgow G3 6RT.
