Bristol regular and blues guitar legend, Eddie Martin accompanied by the Little Bighorns, 5-string bass and a drummer who’d never played with the band before! Took the Old Duke by storm this Sunday evening, finally letting me see where the Duke gets its reputation from...
Sunday 27th May 2001. Eddie Martin and the Little Bighorns. Old Duke, Bristol.
Almost as fun to watch as to hear, over the course of the hot evening the Little Bighorns in particular went from looking slightly awkward and bashful on stage to dancing, laughing and chatting so much that it was impressive in itself that they remembered when to come in. Each contributor was truly something but, to coin a phrase, the ensemble was way more than the sum of its parts. If anyone knows anything about that ‘festival’ that happens outside the Old Duke in summertime, like when is it? Are Eddie Martin and the Little Bighorns playing? do let us know.
For such great music, there should to be room to dance and unfortunately the Old Duke was so packed out in Eddie’s honour that even shuffling from foot to foot was a bit daring. Although watching the trombone player take pot shots at people as they wriggled past the front of the stage to go to the bar was fun… good stuff.
