A day of workshops and discussion on the issues you don’t hear about in the mainstream news, offering Bristol activists and other interested parties a chance to learn more about globalisation and how it affect you, to meet community resistance groups and hear about local activities and actions, to gather information for action, to discuss tactics, to share knowledge...

Saturday 26th May 2001. Resistance Conference. Malcolm X Centre, Ashley Road, Bristol.

Invited speakers represented a broad range of the political spectrum, connected by one overarching belief: that the neo-liberal agenda isn’t acceptable, and that we ourselves have to take responsibility for our community, our society, our environment. Hoping to counteract feelings of powerless, this conference brought together more than 150 people from Bristol and beyond, all eager to affect change. The closing speaker of the day summed up with a quote from George Monbiot’s book “Captive State: The Corporate Takeover of Britain”, and I’ll sum this article up with it too:

“No one else will fight this battle for us. There will be no messiah, no conquering hero to deliver us from the corporate leviathan. Most of our representatives have either been coopted or crushed. Only one thing can reverse the corporate takeover of Britain. It’s you”.
